Whether to hardwire “open in a new tab/window” into Clilstore links

2012-05-17

There has been some discussion recently about whether the links from Clilstore units should have “open in a new tab/window” – or whether authors should at least have the option to do this. While I agree that opening a link in a new tab or window can be very useful, especially for exercises attached to units, I feel that it should be left to the users to choose this (using right-click), and that hardwiring it is a bad idea. Other people may feel that the users will not know how to do it for themselves and need the help of hardwiring. I have written up my views here:

http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~caoimhin/obair/tools/diatribe.html

Has anyone any thoughts or comments on this?

Whether or not to hardwire “open in new tab/window” in links

2012-05-17

There is some discussion at the moment of whether or not it would be a good idea to hardwire “open in a new tab/window” into the links from Clilstore units – or at least give the author of the unit the option to do so.  While I agree that opening a link in a new browser tab or window can be very useful (e.g. for units with associated exercises), I feel that it should be left to the user to choose for themselves (using right-click) and that hardwiring is a bad idea.  Other people may feel that the users may not know how to do it for themselves and need help.  I have written up my thoughts here:

http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~caoimhin/obair/tools/diatribe.html

Does anyone have any thoughts or comments on this?
